Introducing The Rootstock Roadmap: 2024/25
It is Rootstock’s year to make Bitcoin work for everyone!
2024 kicked off with a big change in how we see Bitcoin and decentralization worldwide. ETF nods, Bitcoin halving bashes and the boom of smart contracts via BitVM projects are all signs of Bitcoin love. Plus, the Rootstock crew is hustling on a public plan to soup up the network in the next year.
Here’s what will happen for Rootstock this year!
Deep dive into the roadmap now!
Making Rootstock accessible for everyone!
Pegging in and out of the Rootstock ecosystem is a top priority for contributors this year, with a focus on making accessibility as easy as possible.
Strategic integrations with Flyover, Boltz, and Lightning will provide faster, cheaper, and non-custodial swaps, giving users the flexibility to enter and exit Rootstock seamlessly despite their crypto-savviness level.
The year will also bring the Bictoin native asset bridge, introducing seamless cross-chain transfers of Bitcoin assets (Runes / Taproot Assets) into Rootstock, and diversifying the Rootstock DeFi ecosystem.
And a plus for accessibility, the year will end with the RBTC SuperApp; an all-in-one dApp with all available pathways, enabling fast, versatile, secure and trust-minimized BTC/RBTC transfers.
Pioneering the Bitcoin Virtual Machine space
Although this wasn’t even possible just 6 months ago, the launch of the BitVM whitepaper has made the dream of smart contracts on Bitcoin a reality.
Inspired by BitVM, RootstockLabs and Fairgate researchers came together and launched the BitVMX whitepaper, bringing to life a new CPU for universal computations on Bitcoin.
The primary applications of BitVMX revolve around creating decentralized, trustless bridges for Bitcoin sidechains and enabling the optimistic verification of zero-knowledge (ZK) proofs. These applications are critical for scaling Bitcoin’s utility without compromising its security.
So, by the end of the year, the BitVMX Bridge will revolutionize the bridging technology on Rootstock, by introducing a trust-minimized Bitcoin/Rootstock bridge. This will rely on the 1-of-n honest assumption, and will not require changes to the Bitcoin consensus protocol.
Scaling Rootstock
Rootstock’s innovation roadmap for the year brings about a strategic focus on enhancing scalability, usability, and decentralization, ensuring a robust growth trajectory for its ecosystem.
Key developments include the implementation of stable minimum gas prices tied to fiat and reduced transaction thresholds, alongside RSKIP-419 enhancements that boost the efficiency and usability of the PowPeg system.
Moreover, the integration of RSKj Snap Synchronization slashes node sync times dramatically, complemented by RSKIP-144, which introduces parallel transaction execution to significantly increase throughput and gas limits.
As the year progresses, the focus shifts towards decentralization and Bitcoin synergy with faster transaction confirmations reducing delays from 30 to just 5 seconds, and the Segwit-compatible PowPeg upgrade in RSKIP-305 promoting a wider and more diverse overseer base.
Last but not least, the introduction of Intel SGX-based PowHSMs supports a more secure and diversified hardware security management infrastructure, setting a solid foundation for scalable applications and decentralized advancements.
